How AI Is Changing Commercial Production

Artificial intelligence is changing commercial production faster than almost anyone expected.
From concept development and pre-visualisation to generative imagery, editing and post-production, AI is becoming another tool in the filmmaker's toolkit.
But the most interesting question isn't whether AI will replace production.
It's how production will change because of it.
From blank page to visual concept
One of the biggest advantages of AI is the speed at which ideas can become visual.
A creative concept that previously existed as a paragraph in a treatment can now become a visual reference in minutes.
Directors and creative teams can explore environments, compositions, colour palettes, characters and visual directions before a camera ever enters the picture.
This doesn't replace creative development.
It accelerates it.
Instead of spending hours trying to explain an idea, teams can show clients what they mean.
Pre-production is becoming more visual
AI is also changing the way productions are planned.
Shot concepts can be visualised before the shoot. Locations can be explored. Storyboards can become more detailed. Different creative directions can be tested before committing resources to them.
That means better conversations between agencies, clients and production teams.
It also means fewer surprises on set.
The production process becomes less about discovering the idea while you're shooting and more about executing a clearly understood creative vision.
But AI can't replace reality
There is something AI struggles to replicate convincingly: reality.
Human behaviour is unpredictable.
Light behaves differently every day.
A location has texture.
People have imperfections.
Weather changes.
A motorcycle actually moving through a landscape creates physical energy that is difficult to manufacture convincingly.
For lifestyle, automotive, fashion, travel and documentary-style work, that authenticity remains incredibly valuable.
AI can create an image of the world.
Production allows you to experience it.
The hybrid production model
The future probably isn't AI versus cameras.
It's AI and cameras.
A production might begin with AI-generated concept frames, move into a real-world shoot and then use AI during post-production to extend environments, remove distractions, create transitions or develop additional campaign assets.
The boundaries between production, VFX and generative technology are becoming increasingly fluid.
This gives filmmakers more creative freedom — provided the technology serves the idea.
The human element still matters
Technology can generate an image.
It can't decide what that image should make someone feel.
That still requires taste, direction, storytelling and an understanding of culture.
The production companies that benefit most from AI won't necessarily be the ones using the most technology.
They'll be the ones that know when not to use it.
AI is another tool.
The idea is still the important part.
And ultimately, great commercial filmmaking has always been about the idea.
